    • Dallas H. Smith, pioneer of Maricopa, passed away Sunday morning in Tucson at the age of 80. Mr. Smith, an old time resident of Maricopa, came here from Indio, California on March 17, 1912.

He was a tireless worker for his community. In his earlier years, he was one of the first members on the school board to organize and create a grade school in Maricopa, and served as a faithful member for 19 years.

Mr. Smith was one of the first members on the Board of the Maricopa Irrigation District and acted as secretary on the Maricopa Power District until it was recently reorganized. He helped many a man in any way he could over the rough spots, men who were willing to help themselves and who have shown of his support by the green fields they now cultivate.

The community was also served by Mr. Smith as Justice of the Peace for several years.

Mr. Smith was born at Magnolia, Iowa on February 2, 1874. He was the son of Zackary T. and Adaline Townsend Smith. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was united to Susie B. Sieperda on January 19, 1910.

When he retired on February 2, 1939, Mr. Smith culminated a service of 48 years with the Southern Pacific Railroad. During those 48 years, he acted as agent and telegrapher.
