- Sytze Stephen Lycklama 'a Nijeholt
(September 28, 1979 - February 26, 2012)
Sytze Stephen Lycklama 'a Nijeholt, 32, of Broken Bow, OK passed away Sunday, February 26, 2012 in Idabel, OK. He was born September 28, 1979 in Holland, the son of Tsjerk and Tiete (Van Der Meulen) Lycklama 'a Nijeholt.
He had lived in McCurtain County the past twenty (20) years and was an Equipment Operator and Welder for Terry Pannell Chipping. Stephen enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family. He was a believer of Christ.
Stephen and Melissa Baker were united in marriage on February 24, 2004 in DeQueen, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Devin and Dalton Lycklama 'a Nijeholt.
Stephen leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Melissa of the home; his parents, Tsjerk and Tiete Lycklama 'a Nijeholt; sisters, Teatske Talbert and husband Scott of Stilwell, OK and Nynke Lewia and husband Dan of Antlers, OK; grandmother, Teatske Van Abbema of Holland; nephews, Jonathan, Joshua, Josiah and Judah; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Stephen and his two little sons, Devin and Dalton, all three drowned on Sunday, February 26, 2012 in a boating accident while on a fishing trip at Little River near Idabel, McCurtain County, OK. There was a drop or fall on the river, and the OK Highway Patrol believed that the boat got caught in a strong current and was pulled over the waterfall. The capsized boat was found with the motor in reverse, so Stephen was trying to get away from the waterfall but was unable to do so. After the boat went over the fall and capsized, Stephen tried to rescue the boys, but he got tangled up in the rope that was attached to the boat.
Stephen had many friends and family, was very well-liked and was called "Lyck" by most of them. The superintendent at the Holly Creek Elementary School that Devin and Dalton attended stated that the Lycklama boys were good students and that the news had left all of them in disbelief. He stated that Devin and Dalton were well-liked by all the students, the faculty, the people in the Holly Creek Community, and he said that it had been tough for everyone there. It was a very tragic accident.
Memorial services for all three, Stephen, Devin and Dalton were held Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Broken Bow First Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Chuck Darby officiating.
Burial was at Holly Creek Cemetery, under the direction of Bunch Singleton Funeral Home in Broken Bow, OK.
