211 | Biography Fred Faber - Dad was born September 4, 1935 in Kommerzyl, Groningen, The Netherlands. He grew up in the town of Lutjegast, Groningen. He went to school in Holland. With his family, he immigrated to Canada at the age of 16, in 1951. They first lived in Cloverdale, and then settled in Ladner, where he met Mom. During the day, dad was digging peat, and then milking cows in the early morning and evenings to help with the family finances. His family then moved to Matsqui. Dad boarded with Uncle Hendrick & Aunt Lien. In 1955 they moved to the Pitt Polder and he went along to work clearing land with a bulldozer. In 1957 he started in the cattle business and boarded with Bill & Bertha Oldhof in Abbotsford. Dad married mom on June 13, 1958. They lived on Gladwin Road for a year, and Judy was born. They then moved to 10 acres on Clearbrook Road. Here Marty, Ron and Cynthia were added to the family. Dad's cattle business was flourishing, and he knew it was time to expand and bought the farm on McCallum Road. The family moved here in January of 1966. Six years later, Jackie was born. The family enjoyed many good years on the farm. Dad also built Midway Livestock Auction on Sumas Way, with a partner. Marty was sent to auctioneer school so he could sell the cattle, while mom and most of the girls worked in the restaurant. Mom & Dad moved to Marshall Road, where they live today, and Dad semi-retired. But he still made daily trips to the farm. In 2000 Mom and Dad traveled across Canada on their brand new Harley Davidson, all within 4 weeks. During his retirement years, they took many trips to Europe and enjoyed an Alaskan cruise. December of 2001 Dad had a heart attack and his health began to deteriorate. He still enjoyed a few more years of shorter trips on the Harley and trips to Europe. Over the past 2 years Dad was hospitalized numerous times, but always managed to fight back and come home. His family was everything to him. He was able to enjoy a few afternoons home this past June for his 51st anniversary as well as Father's Day. Dad lost the fight on July 19th and went home to his Heavenly Father. We will miss him. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred's memory can be made to the Canadian Food Grains Bank. | Faber, Fred (I19939)
